JAR of Hope and its Mission

JAR of Hope is a national nonprofit organization that works to generate awareness of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and collect funds for clinical research that will assist in advancing treatment therapies and potentially help to find a cure.

About Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)

DMD is a terminal form of muscular dystrophy that occurs in children, primarily boys. The disease, caused by a mutation of the dystrophin gene, results in severe muscle weakness, inability to walk, and loss of respiratory and cardiac function. The fatality
rate is 100%.

Inspiration behind the cause

James “Jamesy” Raffone was diagnosed with DMD at the age of four, on September 13th, 2013. As the son of JAR of Hope founder and CEO, Jim Raffone, Jamesy is the little inspiration behind the organization’s big mission.

DMD effects on the body

Because of the severe muscle deterioration that occurs with DMD, children lose the ability to walk. As the disease progresses, the heart weakens and breathing becomes difficult, leaving them unable to lead a normal and healthy life.
